<acoburn>ajs6f: question about jena 3.1.1 — RDFDataMgr.read(Model m, String url) isn't following 3xx redirects for the supplied url09:28
<ajs6f>acoburn: Did it ever>?
<acoburn>ajs6f: i.e. for the Fedora ontologies
ajs6f: yes, it does for 3.1.0
ajs6f: I assume it has to do with the change w/ the HTTP client09:29
<ajs6f>acoburn: Okay, I'll look at it, but it's going to take bit.
<acoburn>ajs6f: no worries, I was just wondering if there's something simple I was missing
<ajs6f>acoburn: It's probably got something to do with the HTTP commons upgradees.
<acoburn>ajs6f: exactly, which is why I'm asking you09:30
ajs6f: it affects the tests in fcrepo-vocabulary — there's no problem for W3C vocabs, but there is for the Fedora ones09:31
ajs6f: it may be related to how they are published
ajs6f: the issue is that the RDFDataMgr tries to parse the response body as HTML ???09:32
<ajs6f>acoburn: There is no way to thread an HTTP client into RdfDataMgr now, which I should probably add.
acoburn: In the meantime, can you try setting a static default client that follow redirects?
org.apache.jena.riot.web.HttpOp.setDefaultHttpClient(HttpClient)09:33
<acoburn>ajs6f: thank you, I was just about to ask for a pointer like that
ajs6f: that should work — I'll let you know how it goes
<ajs6f>acoburn: No, it won't necessarily work, but it might.
acoburn: There's a whole bunch of stuff underneath RdfDataMgr including StreamManager and I'm not sure it's actually using the right HTTP machinery09:34
<acoburn>ajs6f: I can also just fetch the ontology with my own HTTP client and then pass the InputStream into the RDFDataMgr
<ajs6f>acoburn: But tha's another question. First try the static default client. It might work.
acoburn: please try tht estatic default client. Another way to say it is, it _should_ work and if it doesn't I need to know that09:35
<acoburn>ajs6f: yes, that's what I'm trying now
<ajs6f>acoburn: rock on09:36
<awoods>whikloj: let's start after the call.09:38
<whikloj>awoods: sounds good
<acoburn>ajs6f: yep, that works09:44
<ajs6f>acoburn: Okay. That's good for now.09:45
acoburn: Can you file a ticket on Jena to allow the use of custom HTTP clients with RdfDataMgr?
<acoburn>ajs6f: suer

<acoburn>ajs6f: awoods: any thoughts on releasing a 0.0.1 version of fcrepo-vocabulary? It is set up to use org.fcrepo as a groupId and fcrepo-vocabulary as the artifactId; now would be the time to change that if they should change10:29
<ajs6f>no objection against a release, but we would need to think about the groupid.
<awoods>acoburn: Are any projects using fcrepo-vocabulary yet?10:30
<acoburn>ajs6f:awoods: I agree — I'm sort of inclined to use org.fcrepo.api, but perhaps we can discuss it today

<ajs6f>apb18: What is in the message body?10:37
<apb18>The strings "Etag mismatch" and/or "Date mismatch"
from ContentExposingResource.evaluateRequestPreconditions10:38
The problem is that HttpClient simply *assumes* that 304 responses don't have an entity body. The Jetty client apparently does so as well10:39
<ajs6f>Well, it's clearly wrong, as you point out.
Or to quote a great man: "What an incredible smell you've discovered!"10:40
<apb18>Yeah. We'd been seeing strange results when proxying through API-X (which uses httpclient under the hood). Elliot Metsger tracked it down. We're probably going to submit a PR to HttpClient to be a bit more defensive about this kind of error, since the effects are so bad10:41
anyway, it's a one-line fix in Fedora's codebase10:42
<ajs6f>apb18++
apb18: Since you are a committer, how about a PR?
<apb18>Yup, we're testing. It's literally hot off the presses, we just tracked it down last night, and confirmed the fix this morning10:43
it probably won't be 'til this afternoon due to meetings. I'm going to have to join the tech meeting late10:44
If it can make it into one of the point releases, great. If not, oh well
<acoburn>apb18: I'm not seeing data payloads in 304 responses — how are you producing this?10:47
* thomz leaves10:48
<awoods>apb18: thanks for raising the issue.
<acoburn>apb18: I've tried both telnet and wireshark to look at TCP dataflow — both show empty entity bodies
apb18: that's with Fedora deployed in tomcat using the current master branch10:49
<awoods>apb18: If you could add the steps to reproduce in the ticket, that would be a help.10:50
apb18: We can discuss the urgency in the tech call...
<apb18>awoods: It doesn't always happen; it's apparent when using a browser through API-X as a proxy. The browser makes N conditional http requests for the Fedora resource and static assets. When you reload, at lease one of these will have the unwanted body in it
The effect when proxying through API-X is that the browser hangs10:51
Whatever http libraries the browsers use are apparently unaffected, but Apache Httpclient (used by API-X) certainly is.10:53
Disabling browser caching (i.e. never making conditional requests) fixes the effects of this issue
<acoburn>apb18: https://gist.github.com/acoburn/ff8a7bb1e154915fe91cf0c0b8bbc87910:54
apb18: I'm still not seeing it
<apb18>acoburn: Elliot has the data on this, I'll ask him to attach to ticket, and potentially attend the tech call. We'd have to join late (half-hour in) due to meeetings10:57

dhlamb: And I'm sure other toolkits.
<dhlamb>ajs6f, jena can compare graphs?
<ajs6f>dhlamb: Absolutely.
dhlamb: Diffs, unions, etc11:28
<dhlamb>ajs6f, if that's the case, what's the problem? just pulling people away from wanting a canonical serialization format?
<ajs6f>dhlamb: As escowles pointed out, there's RDF, and there's HTTP.
dhlamb: HTTP does not understand "sameness" in the same way as RDF.11:29
<dhlamb>ajs6f, gotcha. the graph comparison algorthithm won't spit out a checksum or etag.
<ajs6f>dhlamb: It's not that.11:30
* dwilcox leaves
<MarcusBarnes>Yes. Thanks.11:31
<ajs6f>dhlamb: It's the fact that HTTP understands :same: (e.g. strong ETag) as bit-for-bit same.
dhlamb: And RDF understands :same: as isomorphic, or x entails y and y entails x.
dhlamb: Syntactical vs. semantic.
<dhlamb>ajs6f++ we've had this conversation before :D11:32

<awoods>whikloj: shall I try, or are you still working on it?
<whikloj>awoods: would I need to run something else to make it notice the update?
<awoods>whikloj: I would not think so16:39
<whikloj>awoods: Trying one more time, if it fails again I'll get you to do that if you don't mind
<awoods>whikloj: np, keep me posted
